چکیده

This article reviews and summarizes recent work on flow-structural interaction in solid motors. This interaction is important because it can lead to rocket motor failure. In the first part of the document, an idealized model of the failure mechanism is developed to illustrate in simple terms how such an event can occur. In the second part of this article recently published numerical modeling work, which models flowstructural interactions in some detail, is summarized. The static test failure of the Titan solid rocket motor upgrade (SRMU) that occurred on 1 April 1991 demonstrated the importance of flow-structural modeling in the design of large solid rocket motors.

Acoustic-Mean Flow Interaction in Solid Propellant Rocket Motors

There are several sources for pressure oscillations in solid propellant rocket motors. Oscillatory flow field is one of them. Free shear layers in motor flow field cause vortex shedding. End edges of propellant grains and baffle edge in two-segmented motors are samples of such zones. These vortices move from their forming points and strike the field walls. The kinetic energy of vortices change ...

Coupled Fluid-Structure Interaction Analysis of Solid Rocket Motor with Flexible Inhibitors

Flexible inhibitors are generally used in solid rocket motors (SRMs) as a means to control the burning of propellant. Vortices generated by the flow of propellant around the flexible inhibitors have been identified as a driving source of instabilities that can lead to thrust oscillations in launch vehicles. Potential coupling between the SRM thrust oscillations and structural vibration modes is...

Measuring system value in the Ares 1 rocket using an uncertainty-based coupling analysis approach

Coupling of physics in large-scale complex engineering systems must be correctly accounted for during the systems engineering process to ensure no unanticipated behaviors or unintended consequences arise in the system during operation. Structural vibration of large segmented solid rocket motors, known as thrust oscillation, is a well-documented problem that can affect the health and safety of a...

Numerical Coupling Strategy for Evaporating Two-phase Flow Computations : Application to Solid Rocket Motors

In solid rocket motors, aluminum particles are included in the propellant to improve the global performances but the distributed combustion of these droplets is suspected to be a driving mechanism of hydrodynamic instabilities. So the accurate simulation of reactive polydisperse sprays strongly coupled to unsteady gaseous flows appears as a major issue for solid rocket motor optimization. In th...
